The Wastewater Treatment Process
Sewage Treatment refers to the process of removing contaminants, microorganisms and other types of pollutants from wastewater.
Wastewater, or raw sewage, is water that drains from toilets, sinks, showers, baths, dishwashers, washing machines and liquid industrial waste. It is treated in a multi-stage process by the Water Companies that make it safe to return to the environment.
The wastewater undergoes several stages in its municipal treatment process for Environmental Protection:
Pre-TreatmentThis involves the screening and removal of large debris, including sanitary towels, tampons, sticks, leaves, rags, wet-wipes, etc. from the raw sewage as these are not readily biodegradable by the process bacteria. They are then dried and sent to landfill sites or incinerated.
It also involves the removal of sand and grit which is settled out in tanks and also removed to landfill sites.
Primary Sewage TreatmentThis is another settlement stage, during which mainly organic solids sink to the bottom and form a sludge and fats rise to the surface and form a scum or crust. This crust is colonized by aerobic bacteria (they breathe oxygen) and partially digested. The liquid between these two layers drains off for processing in the Secondary treatment stage and the sludge and crust are removed periodically for further treatment.
Secondary Sewage TreatmentThis stage involves the introduction of oxygen to the sewage and uses aerobic bacteria to break down the organic matter, coming mainly from human body waste, in the liquid part of the sewage. They also reduce the amounts of other contaminants, detergents, etc. and the quality of the resulting effluent is usually regarded as safe for discharge to a watercourse, unless the watercourse is sensitive or already polluted. The dead bacteria and humus are allowed to settle out in a clarifying chamber and this sludge is also removed periodically for further treatment.
Tertiary Treatment
This stage is required for sensitive discharge points eg. trout streams. Tertiary treatment involves a further aerobic stage, followed by an oxygen depleted stage, which reduces nitrogen and phosphorus. It can also include a disinfection process using UV light, chlorination or ozone treatment to remove bacteria and viruses.
Private Wastewater SystemsPackage sewage treatment plants do not usually involve the Pre-treatment or Tertiary treatment stages as the owners are more careful about what they put down the toilet and most watercourses can deal effectively with the minor level of contaminants left in the effluent.

Commercial sewage treatment is the process of removing pollutants from wastewater produced by commercial properties. All wastewater ends up back in the environment but before it does it needs to undergo treatment to reduce harmful effects on the environment.
Packaged sewage treatment plants are generally smaller than other industrial plants, and they are often installed inside buildings. They have the advantage of being factory-built and factory-tested, can be simply transported to site and rapidly installed. Where expert supervision is available, these can be easy to operate. They are also more reliable because many replicates will have been tested under the same conditions.
Sewage treatment (or domestic wastewater treatment, municipal wastewater treatment) is a type of wastewater treatment which aims to remove contaminants from sewage to produce an effluent that is suitable for discharge to the surrounding environment or an intended reuse application, thereby preventing water pollution from raw sewage discharges. Sewage contains wastewater from households and businesses and possibly pre-treated industrial wastewater. There are a high number of sewage treatment processes to choose from. These can range from decentralized systems (including on-site treatment systems) to large centralized systems involving a network of pipes and pump stations (called sewerage) which convey the sewage to a treatment plant. For cities that have a combined sewer, the sewers will also carry urban runoff (stormwater) to the sewage treatment plant. Sewage treatment often involves two main stages, called primary and secondary treatment, while advanced treatment also incorporates a tertiary treatment stage with polishing processes and nutrient removal. Secondary treatment can reduce organic matter (measured as biological oxygen demand) from sewage,??? using aerobic or anaerobic biological processes.

The sewage or wastewater treatment plant is designed to remove the soluble organic and inorganic wastes from the sewage using a biological process. The various components of this treatment are aeration, sedimentation, filtration, mixing and disinfection chambers. The main purpose of this plant is to treat wastewater and by-products from Human being, industrial activities and farming.
We are sewage treatment plant manufacturers in India, we supply various types of STP plants such as Domestic sewage treatment plant , SBR sewage treatment plant , household sewage treatment plant , commercial sewage treatment plant , domestic sewage treatment system , MBBR sewage treatment plant , Industrial sewage treatment plant, mbr sewage treatment plant , Residential sewage treatment plant.

Treatment Stages | Secondary Treatment |

Sewage contains a huge amount of organic matter which is toxic. Microorganisms are widely used in the sewage treatment plant for removing this toxic organic matter. Sewage or wastewater treatment plant consists of two stages.
-
Primary Treatment
It involves the removal of large or small-sized components in the wastewater through physical processes.
-
Biological Treatment:
Aerobic microorganisms are inoculated into the sewage treatment plant. These microbes utilize the organic components of the sewage and reduce the toxicity. This can be measured by BOD (Biological oxygen demand).
After the biological treatment, the sludge is pumped from the treatment plant into a large tank. This large tank consists of anaerobic bacteria which lead to the digestion of sludge. During digestion, biogas is produced and it is used as an energy source. Hence, Sewage treatment plant design and sewage management play a crucial role in the maintenance of human welfare.
Energy generationMicroorganisms which are involved in the production of energy are called microbial fuel cells. Microbial fuel cells are used to generate a variety of energy sources like biogas and electricity. Agricultural waste, manure, and domestic wastes are used as raw materials for the generation of biogas. Biogas generation is done in the large concrete tank which is called a biogas plant.
Biomasses (Biowastes) are collected at the biogas plant and the slurry is fed. Biomasses are rich in organic matter. Some of the bacteria can grow anaerobically inside the biogas plant. These bacteria can digest the biomasses which are present in the slurry and sewage. During digestion, a huge amount of mixture of gasses is released inside the tank. The mixture of these gasess is called the biogas. Biogas is removed from the biogas plant through a separate outlet.
Microbial fuel cells are also used to generate electricity from wastewater. Microbial fuel cells utilize the organic matter from the wastewater treatment plant. During digestion, organic matters are converted into the simple molecule and release the carbon dioxide and electrons. Those electrons are absorbed by the electrode and used as the source of electricity.
